Eight years ago, Debbie Shrank suffered severe brain damage after an accident left her in a wheelchair and living in a nursing home. Debbie was awarded a $1million dollar lawsuit against the trucking company which resulted in $417,000 (after legal fees). What Shanks didn't realize was that in the fine print of Wal-Mart's health plan policy, the company has the right to recoup medical expenses if an employee collects damages in a lawsuit. Which is exactly what Wal-Mart successfully did... for $470,000.
