More and more lists!

30 Books That Can Make You a Better Leader

It's that time of the year again... Year-in-review lists are flowing through the blogosphere like some kind of great flood. I was recently talking to a friend who is a blogger for human events who mentioned that his readers just LOVE lists...

Well, the Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) just published their booklist of management books. and he was amazed at how much people LOVE lists.

Social Networking

OK, I get it, social networking is what is breathing new life into the Internet. Leading the transformation from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0, if you will.

What the heck is it? How is
myspace, linkedin, any different from discussion boards, diaryland, and things that have been floating around cyberspace since the Internet's inception. The idea of virtual groups isn't anything new, but for some reason, it's been magically relabeled. I think it's that we've finally come to understand what the Internet is. No longer is it something that your next door neighbor's kid only understands, but as Gen X grows up and has kids, as Gen Y enters the workforce, you suddenly have a bunch of people who use the Internet to determine how many cups are in a quart (i used google).

The idea of social networking has always been there, but during the past year, the voice of the cyberuser is increasingly important as a single voice has found similar voices.

In thinking about the key differences between the older social networking sites are that these new sites encourage interaction and validation from the group. Not sure if you ever used
yelp, but when the very first time I posted something there, within a day or two I received words of encouragement from fellow yelpers on my entry. I was euphoric, I was excited, I felt that I was helping my brothers and sisters out in cyberspace find a restaurant worth checking out (the restaurant I yelped about is Corduroy in DC). I reread what I wrote and found my half-hazard entry filled with grammar and spelling mistakes. That's when I realized... I'm being duped. I bet there are people in Yelp who are encouragers.

But I digress.... what got me on this was the popular of very random websites. My friend worked on the ebay match up website. I tried to explain it to another friend the other day... "you can post matchups like
inspector gadget versus johnny 5 and then people vote on it. uhhh.. that's it."

The psychology of garnering validation via cyberspace really interests me. More successfully,
Yahoo Answers, I still don't get why the points are important. Can someone explain it to me?

Maybe i'll have to post it onto the site to get the answer.
